Malox are Eyal Talmudi and Roy Chen, a crazy energetic saxophone-drums duo, based in Israel. The duo formed in 2008, and has already completed 3 studio albums, has performed at festivals and has toured all over the world. Malox’s debut album “One Day” (2008) was improvised and recorded in Vibromonk studio NYC in only one day, while their second album “Polka[1] For Punks” (2012) was recorded and mixed by Tamir Muskat in Tel Aviv. Their third album “Gaza Trip” was released this March.

Their music can be labeled under jazz, polka, and even alternative rock, and includes raw danceable yet complex compositions, playful improvisations and catchy tunes. The virtuoso musicianship that just these two people can create onstage, is remarkable.

Malox will convince even the most conformist listener that all the rest is redundant, and that combination of saxophone and drums will make your body move like it’s never moved before.

[1] Polka: The polka is a Central European dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the 19th century in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic.

[2] Klezmer: A musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe, originally referred to musical instruments and later extended to musicians and musical genre. The genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. Klezmer is easily identifiable by its characteristic expressive melodies, reminiscent of the human voice, complete with laughing and weeping.

[3] Dub: A genre of music that grew out of reggae in the 1960s. Music in this genre consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, and emphasizing the drum and bass parts.

也门与非洲，一海相隔——那是一片关于绝望，关于祈祷，关于激情、舞蹈、爱和对自由的渴望的海，而Gulaza的音乐正是它的一种映照。

Gulaza的概念诞生于Igal Mizrahi和Ben Aylon的结合。他们组建了一个二重奏，将古老的也门歌曲与非洲N’goni的声音相结合，并在欧洲一著名音乐节登台演出。

Igal出生于阿尔及利亚，父亲是也门裔，母亲拥有摩洛哥血统。这样的出身，让他得以窥见隐秘而迷人的也门女性歌谣世界。他对她们的传统歌曲和文本进行了多年的潜心研究——那些歌曲，是处于社会边缘地位的也门女性的生活写照，从母亲到女儿秘密地口耳相传，世世代代留传至今。

Ben则曾在西非学习，师从诸多伟大的艺术家和当地音乐家，并深入探索非洲文化。这种经历让Ben能够理解两种文化间存在的深刻联系，终与Igal一起踏上也门探索女性音乐世界的奇幻旅程。

他们一起运用Igal多年来收集的歌曲素材进行创作。这些歌曲有些来自Igal儿时的记忆，有些来自他对也门女性长者的亲自拜访。创作期间，他们产生了新的渴望——他们想将理念扩展至更具共性的层面。他们开始将目光投向更多的乐器，并迎来了两位新成员：吉他手Ian Aylon深谙南美民俗且擅长爵士乐和古典吉他，他为乐队加入了和声部分，充实了Igal的人声与Ben演奏的N’goni和节奏之间的自然联系；Jacky Fay则用大提琴带来了古典音乐的世界，为Gulaza的音乐补充了低音部分，更注入一丝温暖与柔和。

[1] Djeli N’goni：N’goni（Ngoni）是一种源自西非的弦乐器，三种主要的类型分别为Djeli、Donso和Kamale。Djeli N’goni（Jeli N’goni）是一种传统曼丁哥弦乐器，主要由Jeli（格里奥，西非的部落历史口述保存人）演奏，被认为是当今的班卓琴的原型。

Yemen and Africa are separated by sea. Gulaza is an expression of that sea — a sea of despair, prayer, passion, dance, love and longing for freedom.

The concept of Gulaza was born when Igal Mizrahi and Ben Aylon joined to create a duet between an ancient Yemenite song and the sound of the African N’goni, as a part of a concert in a famous festival in Europe.

Igal, whose father is of Yemenite origin and mother of Moroccan descent, born in Algeria, was exposed in his life to the hidden and fascinating world of Yemenite Women, and has spent years studying their traditional songs and texts that expresses the marginalized life in the Yemenite society. These songs were told as secrets and have been preserved for generations from word of mouth, from mother to daughter.

Ben, who explored the African culture and studied in West Africa with the greatest artists and local musicians. He understood the deep connection that exists between the cultures and joined Igal to a journey throughout the fascinating musical world of women in Yemen.

Together they began working on songs collected by Igal for years both from childhood memories and personal meetings with old Yemenite women. During their creation came the desire to expand the statement to a more universal one, and they began to look for more instruments. Ian Aylon, a guitarist specializing in South American folklore, jazz and classical guitar, joined as he adds the harmonic part and complements the natural connection between Igal’s voice and the rhythms and N’goni playing of Ben. Jacky Fay, brought the classical world with the cello, adding bass, warmth and tenderness into the music of Gulaza.

[1] Djeli N’goni: The ngoni or “n’goni” is a string instrument originating in West Africa. There are three main types, the djeli, the donso and the kamale. Djeli N’goni (Jeli N’goni) is a traditional Mande lute played by the jeli (griot). It is considered the ancestor of the modern-day banjo.
