Free Nelson Mandoomjazz is a trio of musicians originally from Scotland, whose signature sound is a unique mixture of jazz from the 50’s, free jazz from the late 60’s, elements of baroque and classical chamber music and doom rock/metal.
They derive their inspiration as much from heavy metal icons like Black Sabbath and Slayer, as from avant jazz icons such as Marshall Allen, Albert Ayler, Peter Brötzmann and John Zorn as from composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti.
Rebecca Sneddon on saxophones, Colin Stewart on electric bass and Paul Archibald on drums and percussion but also occasional piano and organ, have developed their incredibly unique sound through three albums, and a long sequence of concerts in the UK and continental Europe, including recently the Berlin Jazz Fest, the Match & Fuse Festival in London and the White Noise / Black Silence Festival in Munich, Germany.
The group’s debut album “The Shape Of Doomjazz To Come / Saxophone Giganticus” was released in 2014 and follow-up album “Awakening of a Capital” was released February 2015 to positive critical reception, featuring on The New York City Jazz Record’s “Best Albums of 2015” and Jazz Journal’s “Best Albums of 2015”, among others. Their third album, titled “The Organ Grinder” will be released September 2016.
