“Min-Wu-Xu” Trio was founded in Netherlands in 2009. Three pioneers of contemporary Chinese music, Min Xiaofen, Wu Wei and Xu Fengxia, represents the rapid changes occurring in modern China, standing for openness for experiments and new directions in music, but firmly rooted in traditional Chinese culture. The three of them have gone through intensive studies in ancient Chinese music and have become masters on their respective instruments. The trio has staged in Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands. Although originally from China, this will be their first gig in China.
Min Xiao Fen
Hailed by The New York Times as “a pipa player like no other” and the Village Voice as an artist who “has taken her ancient Chinese string instrument into the future”, Min Xiaofen is a master of the pipa, a four-stringed, pear-shaped lute with a 2000-year history.
Known for her virtuosity and fluid style, Min has expanded her instrument’s possibilities as an element for contemporary composition, tacking fluidly between the extended techniques of free improvisation, jazz, full-on noise and contemporary classical vocabulary. Her music interweaves traditional music, regional operas and Taoist music with John Cage, jazz and blues. Her works transcend borders with their own brand of cutting-edge fusion. Min’s treatments of jazz standards by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington, mixed with some of their historical counterparts in 1930s Shanghai nightlife repertoire, led her to be the first Chinese musician invited to perform in a Jazz at Lincoln Center program. Her special interest in trumpeter Buck Clayton’s visits to Shanghai in that time led to her 2014 program with her Blue Pipa Trio. On her latest solo set, “Mao, Monk and Me”, Min investigates the deep and unexpected connections between the jazz standards of Thelonious Monk and Chinese music.
Her 2012 CD, “Dim Sum”, reflects the dues she’s paid and the returns on her investments in her own voice and language. She has worked with many distinguish composers and musicians including John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Tan Dun (谭盾), Chen Yi (陈怡), Zhou Long (周龙), Wadada Leo Smith, Randy Weston, Jane Ira Bloom, Philip Glass, Ned Rothenberg, sound artists Carl Stone and DJ Spooky, as well as sound and visual pioneer Christian Marclay. Min has received awards from Meet the Composer, Asian Cultural Council and The Peter S. Reed Foundation. Min has been a curator at The Stone, John Zorn’s venue, and Museum of Chinese in America in New York City. She is the founder of Blue Pipa Inc. and currently lives in New York City.

Xu Fengxia
Born in China, Xu Fengxia is an internationally renowned musician who plays traditional Chinese instruments including guzheng, sanxian, guqin and liuqin. After graduated from Shanghai Conservatory, she joined the famous Shanghai Chinese Orchestra as a sanxian soloist and toured Germany with the orchestra as early as 1987.
After having moved to Germany in 1991, Xu Fengxia began to discover new musical ideas and materials. In addition to traditional Chinese music, Xu Fengxia has developed her own personal style of a mixture of elements from different styles of music all over the world to more abstract and avant-garde materials, and in many contexts her own beautiful voice.
She has worked with with various accomplished artists such as Peter Brötzmann, Joe Fonda, Hamid Drake, Assif Tsahar, Matthias Schubert, Frank Gratkowski, Baby Sommer, Misha Feigin, Michael Heupel, Uwe Oberg, Lê Quan Ninh, Martin Blume, Johannes Bauer, Luc Houtkamp, Wilbert de Joode
