[4] Tramp Records:
“Sublime afro-release – what classics are made of”

“The best merger of deep funk[1] sharpness with Nigerian styles in recent years”

From 2013 when The KutiMangoes was formed, things have happened quickly for the 6-piece afro-beat[2]/soul jazz[3] band based in Copenhagen. Starting with a unique collaboration with Burkina Faso vocalist Patrick Kabré, they signed with legendary German funk/afro-beat label Tramp Records[4] and subsequently released debut album “Afro-Fire”, which has received international critical acclaim and radio airplay on BBC, Bayerische Rundfunk (DE), FM4 (AT), Radio X (DE), WNYU Radio (US) and many others. In between receiving 4 Danish Grammy nominations and winning “Best World Music Album”, The KutiMangoes have toured extensively in Europe as well as Western Africa and Israel.
The KutiMangoes takes their musical inspiration from Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus as well as traditional African music. Three brass players, two drummers and a man at the keys skillfully switch between the instruments, in what artistic director of Burkina Faso’s “Jazz à Ouaga” festival Abdullaye Diallo termed, “a rarely successful unification of African and European music. Fantastic!”
[1] Deep funk: A genre of funk music which, unlike traditional mainstream funk, has a more soulful, rawer, grittier, and “heavier” sound.
[2] Afro-beat: A combination of traditional Ghana music, jazz, highlife, funk and chanted vocals, fused with percussion and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s.
[3] Soul jazz: A development of jazz incorporating strong influences from blues, soul, gospel in music for small groups.
[4] Tramp Records: One of Germany’s tiniest but funkiest labels. They release new bands, but also re-issue quality rare funk, soul and jazz too.
