Dainius Pulauskas Group (DPG) was formed in 1996 and instantly became one of the leading Lithuanian jazz units and an internationally renowned ambassador of Lithuanian jazz. During its first decade the group has performed all over Europe, as well as at jazz festivals in China and India, recorded 5 CDs and a DVD “Trajectorie”, and recently produced a program with the symphony orchestra[1]. For several years the group has appeared as a sextet and in the past few years has performed in different combinations.

The group’s key to success is the artistic excellence of its individual members, their unparalleled ensemble, and, of course, their music — a most idiosyncratic and vivid version of fusion once described as “a forceful pulse of modern jazz” by Risto Haapsamo. The group’s repertoire consists largely of compositions by its leader, Dainius Pulauskas. Either marked with Nordic austerity, or seething with energy and peppiness, his music invariably displays solid structuring of musical textures and colorful combinations of acoustic and electronic instruments.

To recognize their achievement, the Lithuanian Musicians’ Union awarded the group with the Gold Disc in 2001; in 2004 the group received the LT Identity[2] Award of the Lithuanian Institute for promoting Lithuanian jazz.

[1] Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, which was found in 1988 by Lithuanian conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius, has cooperated with DPG at the 2005 Vilnius Jazz Festival as the opening concert.

Charles Pasi今年三十出头。他出生在巴黎，母亲是法国人，父亲是意大利人——这已有足够的理由，让他得以走得更远、看得更深，并且不安于已知。不同的语言和文化在这样的家庭里交融，大量的交流与碰撞，让彼此都深知：每当越过一条边界，都能看到不一样的风景。

十六岁的一天，他伫立在一家乐器商店门口——这个年纪的青少年通常会选择吉他，但Charles偏偏选择了口琴。他尝试着去熟悉它，驯服它，与它成为一体。与此同时，Charles申请加入了一个福音合唱团，并在音乐学院里学习如何理解这门让他愈发好奇的新语言；而为了更自由地作曲，他也拿起了吉他……他犹如一个“暴食者”般不断贪婪地吸收，并似乎开始闪耀出与众不同的光芒。

从索邦大学的肄业后，他用了一年时间去探索罗马——旅行是他的灵感之源。在意大利，他组建了自己的第一支乐队——Les Mood in Black，一个集摇摆、布鲁斯和摇滚于一身的乐队，并在乐队里担任口琴乐手。之后他回到巴黎，独自创作了他的第一批原创歌曲。

Charles带着自己的音乐走进酒吧、俱乐部、老人院，并且为交通事故受害者、智力障碍者演奏自己的音乐。当他遇到吉他手Antoine Holler时，两人一拍即合，独立创作了Charles的第一张专辑《Mainly Blue》，并于2006年发行，那年Charles才22岁。不久，Charles获得了专为年轻有才的音乐人而设的Tremplin de Blues sur Seine大奖，这也为他敲开了各大音乐节的大门。

Charles Pasi is barely in his thirties. He was born in Paris. French mother, Italian father, already a reason good enough for him to look further, higher, and to not settle with evidence. At home, different sounds and cultures are mixed, and there is a lot of exchanging. They know there is a horizon to go past.

When he was 16, he chose harmonica. Any regular teenagers will choose the guitar, to imitate their hero or to seduce a young girl in the summer, before abandoning the instrument in an attic without hope. But not Charles. Something else, still unidentified, seemed to haunt him. As for the harmonica, he learned how to tame it, he appropriated it, and it gradually became a part of him. While at it, Charles signed up in a gospel choir, and at the music academy, he learned how to understand this new language, which invaded him a little more each day. He also took up guitar, in order to be able to compose more freely. Fulgurating bulimia.

After graduated from high school and a short frustrated experience in Sorbonne, Charles left to discover Rome for a year. Traveling is his oxygen. In Italy, he joined his first band, Les Mood in Black, a swing, blues and old style rock & roll band, as a harmonica player. Then back to Paris, he wrote his first songs, alone.

When he met Antoine Holler, a guitarist, he played his compositions to him and they decided to produce Charles’ first album, “Mainly Blue”, which finally came out in 2006 when Charles turned 22. What came next was almost a miracle — Charles won the Tremplin de Blues sur Seine, giving him the possibility to perform in festivals.

In 2010, Charles started to work on his second album. His concerts were sold out everywhere. And in 2011, “Uncaged” was born. He has collaborated on the soundtracks of Louis Garrel, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s films as well. His third album, “Sometimes Awake” (title inspired by a short story by Faulkner) came out in October 2014. Evolved with his own style, of course, the songs once again revealed his originality and his way of transfiguring everything, whether it was blues, soul, African music, American music or classical music.

Charles experiments things that resemble him: deep, sensual and free, always with this inspiration from images. He likes to dream, sleep and write in his bed, taking his time, doing and redoing again. He is nostalgic for a time he never knew, which is maybe why his songs have such a dreamlike character. Charles may have never lived through the Renaissance, nor the 60s or future, but he knows that he is moving along the same timeline, in which those who are sensitive to beauty can contact each other. He continues his journey as a stranger at the end of the road, where everything is still possible. The world belongs to him.

关于维尔纽斯爵士音乐节（Vilnius Jazz Festival）

维尔纽斯爵士音乐节始创于1987年，是当地历史最为悠久的一个爵士节。这个每年一度在立陶宛首都举办的盛会向人们展示了当代世界各地的爵士动向和广阔前景。历年来，维尔纽斯爵士音乐节总是向着新奇与未知进发，着重于不断挑战界限的创造力，也因此以其彻底的前卫性而广为人知。在这里，拥有学院派、民族、摇滚或工业音乐等不同背景的音乐人常常有机会一起合作，因此，爵士和自由即兴之间形式上的边界常常被跨越和延伸。

Antanas Gustys（1959年生，1982年毕业于考纳斯技术大学），维尔纽斯爵士音乐节的创办人、艺术总监及制作人，公共机构“维尔纽斯爵士音乐节”的总监。Europe Jazz Network联合大会于2007年投票选举Antanas Gustys（维尔纽斯爵士音乐节）为董事会成员之一，翌年再度获选。

Introduction of Vilnius Jazz Festival

Founded in 1987, Vilnius Jazz is the oldest annual jazz festival held in Vilnius. It is an exceptional event in Lithuania, providing a broad perspective on contemporary trends in jazz from all over the world. Over the years Vilnius Jazz has earned a reputation of a radical avant-garde festival oriented towards novelty and limit-stretching creativity. The stylistic boundaries of jazz and free improvised music are often crossed and expanded here by offering joint projects with musicians from academic, ethnic, rock and industrial music backgrounds.

The international Vilnius Jazz Festival is renowned for its creative and ambitious programmes featuring some of the biggest names on the international jazz scene alongside the best of Lithuanian talents. The festival’s hall of fame includes such world-class names as The Zawinul Syndicate (US), Sonny Simmons-Oliver Lake Quartet (US), Vyacheslav Ganelin (IL), Otomo Yoshihide (JP), Fred Frith (UK) , Cinematic Orchestra (UK), Iva Bittova (CS), Cuong Vu Trio (US), Willem Breuker Kollektief (NL), Kazutoki Umezu (JP), James Blood Ulmer (US), David Murray Black Saint Quartet (US), Bill Frisell (US) and many others. Many international projects have been organized through close collaboration with international cultural institutions and foundations, such as Goethe-Institut, British Council, Swedish Institute, Pro Helvetia and Japan Foundation.

Attracting an audience of around 5000 each year, Vilnius Jazz has played a formative role for several generations of jazz fans. It has also to its credit helped develop local players who have then moved onto performing in other European venues and international jazz groups. Recognized as one of the most important signposts in Eastern Europe, Vilnius Jazz remains devoted to nurturing and promoting the living tradition of improvised music in Lithuania. In 2005, it joined the membership of the Europe Jazz Network[1].

The festival usually offers a 4-5 day programme of concerts, workshops and jam sessions featuring up to 20 different groups. The coming 28th edition of the International Vilnius Jazz Festival will be held on 15-18 October.

Europe Jazz Network General Assembly (Bruges/Ghent, 69 September, 2007) has elected Antanas Gustys (Vilnius Jazz Festival) to the board of EJN directors. And the second year, Antanas Gustys was elected again.

[1] Europe Jazz Network (EJN), formed in 1987, registered office in Pantin, France. EJN is created as a network of promoters who connected with one another through Internet to share ideas and collaborate in organizing tours and concerts. As of September 2008, the membership included 61 organizations (festivals, clubs and concert venues, independent promoters, national organizations) in 20 European countries.
