——Mari Kono,《SCRAM》
“Did you ever hear a bird chirping outside your window on a glorious morning, reminding you to enjoy the day? … Listening to Janet Klein’s sweet birdlike voice makes you feel like you woke up in your silk pajamas right next to your favorite sweetheart.”
– Mari Kono, SCRAM MAGAZINE
With her sleek bob haircut (usually with a flower placed just so), vintage fashion sense, strikingly beautiful looks and artfully customized ukulele, Janet Klein might seem at first to be a simple novelty act, a 21st-century hipster “ironically” recreating the subtly naughty looks of a fin-de-siecle French postcard. Then she opens her mouth to sing. There’s no Betty Boop hiccups or Mae West-style brassiness in her charmingly original voice. And when she starts to play her ukulele, it’s clear that this oft-ridiculed cousin of the guitar is neither prop nor gimmick, but a delightful and under-utilized musical instrument. Bearing an ever expanding repertoire of, as she puts it, “obscure, lovely and naughty songs from the 1910’s, 20’s and 30’s,” Janet Klein is a musical archeologist hiding in the body of an F. Scott Fitzgerald heroine.
Born in California, Janet has always felt a strong affinity to the music and culture of the early 20th century. She doesn’t merely perform songs from “Lost America” – she actually lives them, and transports her audiences along the way. She and her L.A. based band The Parlor Boys authentically capture the wild spirit and exciting vigor of early jazz.
Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys regularly perform at historic theaters in Hollywood and Los Angeles and other landmark venues throughout the United States. The band just completed a 13-year run at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. They’ve toured Japan 4 times, including the Fuji Rock Festival and have appeared in festivals in Adelaide Australia and Dublin Ireland.
Janet has also done voice work for animation specials: Adventure Time and Over The Garden Wall and has been featured in numerous documentaries about the resurgence of the ukulele.
