——Art Lange,
“Yannick Rieu combines honest statement and tender delivery in a truly original manner; he plays with the instrument’s breathy and rough textures, going from murmur to outburst, from reserved to talkative.”
– Jazz Magazine, Paris
“Contextually neither expressionist nor impressionist, avant-gardist nor neo-conservative, Yannick Rieu instead inhabits a middle ground, where inspiration is motivated by individual concern, a private vision. The choice he has made mark him as a musician of thoughtful gesture and singular craft.”
– Art Lange, New York
Praised as “the greatest poet of Canadian jazzmen” by Jazzman, France, composer and saxophonist Yannick Rieu was the recipient of 2006 Oscar Peterson Award, as a celebration of the quality of his art and his outstanding contribution to the development of Canadian jazz.
After studying at the Conservatoire de Rennes (France), then in Chicoutimi and Montreal, he began his jazz career in 1980. As early as 1988, Down Beat, the American bible of jazz, ranked him amongst the 20 most talented saxophonists in the world alongside Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano and Courtney Pine. Since then, Yannick Rieu has played throughout the world and collects praise and awards, both for his recordings and his performances on stage.
A great admirer of the legendary sax players who marked the history of jazz over the last half-century, including Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sidney Bechet, Wayne Shorter and Steve Lacy, Yannick absorbed their influences to forge his own style, skillfully mastered and highly personal. Rieu’s expression is utterly free of cliches and his phrasing is as much innovative and captivating, revealing the artist’s strong understanding and competence within the jazz idiom.
The project “Coltrane and Beyond” lead by Yannick Rieu relived the music of the music giant, American jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. Merely mention the name John Coltrane and you’re likely to evoke a deeply emotional, often spiritual response from even the most casual jazz fan. As his career progressed, Coltrane and his music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension. Coltrane influenced innumerable musicians, and remains one of the most significant saxophonists in music history.
Through this project, Yannick Rieu wants to explore and suggests new ideas concerning the interpretation of Coltrane’s music. A whole new repertoire that makes an overview of the developmental stages of this great musician. Rieu will unite his skills to those of Remi-Jean Leblanc on upright bass, Xia Jia on piano and Kevin Warren on drums. With these colleagues Yannick Rieu wants to explore and suggests new ideas concerning the interpretation of Coltrane’s music.
